That said, I'd prefer to use the native Oauth facility in phpBB. However, when I enable it, it does *not* request the user's email address; and the user must still register to create a new account if they don't already have an account to link to.

Is there a way to change this behavior - so that phpBB's Oauth mimics the behavior of OneAll's Social Login extension?
phpBB's OAuth support is a bit limited compared to other OAuth solutions which automatically register you. Users do need to register an account first and then link other providers to it. I don't suspect this will change.
